Kevin proposed on a hike in the Great Smokey Mountains so it's appropriate that our ten year anniversary trip was a hiking trip, no?
We married August 18th, 2001 at the Graystone Inn in downtown Wilmington, NC. It was an afternoon wedding with about 100 guests. We rode away on a horse and carriage but we were staying in the Graystone's honeymoon suite that night so we just rode around downtown waiting for everyone to clear out.
I didn't eat a bite at the reception. I remember being about to take a bite of starfruit when my flower girl niece, River approached and asked for it, so no, I didn't end up eating anything. And I'd taken so much time picking out the food! My only regret about that day is not having a plate of food prepared and waiting for us in our room.
As soon as Kevin and I got back from our carriage ride we changed into normal clothes and walked around the corner to the drug store and bought junk food. The next day we had to finish clearing out my apartment but on Monday morning we were off to our honeymoon in St. Lucia.
Since then... We've lived in three states and owned three houses (and done an insane amount of projects on said houses). We lost a cat and got a dog. We've added two college degrees and had three kids. Kevin had a major career change and I've bounced around jobs for supplemental income. We've taken some incredible trips - Hawaii and Italy being two of our favorites, but Russia being the most important! We've been through a jury trial. We've had a drunk driver hit Kevin and dealt with subsequent insurance head aches but thankfully no injuries. We've watched our child leave a hospital in a helicopter on his way to an ICU at another hospital. We've been members of three churches together. We've seen large windfalls of cash, but we've also been down to our last $500. We went through a home birth together. We saw that child diagnosed with Fragile X Syndrome. We have a middle child who has turned into a defiant pee-er. We've lived with my mother.
We've had our anniversary trip, our anniversary dinner at Arnaud's in New Orleans, and another terrific dinner our last night in Montana at Carbon County Steakhouse which I'm pretty sure is the nicest Red Lodge has to offer. Tonight on our actual anniversary I'm driving to pick up a friend (our maid of honor actually!) at the airport. Tomorrow night we host my mom's birthday dinner with her friends. And then Saturday Kevin's off to Tampa for a Fantasy Football Draft. It's a good thing we already celebrated.
Life takes over. But we are good at making time for us too. A date I planned for us earlier this year when we went kayaking and then I dragged him around the Norton Museum has probably been one of my favorite days in 2011. Be it hiking to a meadow in the Beartooths of Montana or trying out the newest yuppy favorite dinning experience of the Treasure Coast or Palm Beaches we like the same things. Or when we don't (um, fantasy football), we give each other room. (Although I have been known to say, "We still have kids during football season," in a shrill voice about 1,000x a weekend September through January.)
