I know where I was four years ago today - The Smith County Courthouse in Tyler, Texas celebrating National Adoption Day in the best possible way.
You know. By adopting.
Here's the post I originally wrote about that day: All Things OO
If you know anything about our adoption history you know that OO stands for "Officially Ours." As in, we believe that Kaden and Blue were always meant to be ours, but it didn't become offical from a legal standpoint until their OO Days. Most call it Adoption Day or Gotcha Day. I guess we just like to be confusing and make up our own thing.
November 15, 2009 might be the day Blue's adoption became final, but November 8th, 2007 is when he came into our family.
So... 4 years a Stratton, 6 years together. (And in about 2 weeks he'll be seven years old.)
When we met him, he couldn't walk or talk. He cried through the night and was a fretful, fussy mess for weeks until he finally settled in and accepted us. Our smells, our food, our dog, our church, our life - all of it. And once he was on board, woo! He was on board. What an adjustment from Kaden who, like, stayed in one place for loooonnnnnggggg stretches of time. That was not Blue. Not ever.
These days Blue likes to come up with his own break dance moves to at-home dance parties. HIs (and Toby's) favorite jam right now is Joan Jett and the Blackheart's "I Love Rock 'n' Roll."
He went on his first trail ride last weekend.
He loves to show off his Tae Kwon Do forms (Ask him to do them. He'll be delighted - just stand back.)
He's all about memorizing his way through his Awana book. One jewel down...
Last night he read me our latest library find, Life with Mammoth, in 12 minutes flat.
And he is a lady's man. Ask him who made him his rubber band bracelet and he'll tell you his "girlfriend," ask him about the girl you thought was his girlfriend and he'll say, "No, she's just my BFF." (I can't keep up!)
And then there all the other Blue things that we'll be keeping off the internet because, I don't know, what if Homeland Security is starting a file?
Four years ago today we promised a judge that, no matter what, we were standing by this kid.
It seems to be working out. :-)
